Recently, SUBURBAN CONSULTING ENGINEERS, INC (SCE) teamed up with the New Jersey Water Association (NJWA) for the Training and Assistance Program to aid its members by presenting, “GIS: Good Information Strategies for Water and Sewer Utilities.” Our presentation sought to teach the attending professionals about Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The NJWA hosted three workshops in which licensed water and sewer operators as well as professional engineers were educated about the history of GIS, the components of GIS, and how the technical resources and information acquired using GIS can be made part of a water/wastewater system’s planning and operations processes. The presentation demonstrated how widely GIS is used, how it is becoming a mandatory part of many regulatory approvals and functions, and how its use is integral to the water and wastewater industry.
The five-hour sessions were offered at three locations, providing members in Southern, Central, and Northern New Jersey with free access to four Training Contact Hours (TCHs), which are required to maintain their operators licensing. All the sessions were very well received with a substantial turnout and tremendous positive feedback. The attendees gained valuable information on the constantly evolving topic of GIS; basic terminology was described, current hardware for implementing GIS was highlighted through several hands-on demonstrations, and an overview of how GIS can be used to develop an Asset Management Program was outlined. The attendees gained a greater understanding of how GIS can provide gains in operational efficiencies, assist in creating new-age interactive record keeping, and allow unparalleled access to data for crews in the field.
Highlights in the presentation were SCE case studies, showcasing GIS technology and how SCE has successfully utilized this developing software/hardware system to benefit both large and small utilities SCE has consulted with. Highly-developed views on these information strategies has allowed for fascinating opportunities to showcase SCE’s professional experience and capabilities with both public and private clients in the water/wastewater sector.
